Must See Berlin

You’ve all probably heard of German Markets and you’ve all probably been to the ones that are held in English cities such as Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and Leeds over the Christmas season. But have you ever thought of actually going to Germany and experiencing an authentic German Christmas. Although it has to be said that the German markets in England are great, and I can personally say that Birmingham’s version is fabulous, with food, drink, craft stalls and fair rides, there’s nothing quite like the magic that an authentic Christmas wonderland in Germany brings.

Every year, from the 1st of November until the 4th of January, Berlin’s Postdamer Platz is transformed into an enormous Winter Wonderland. The main focus of the square is its central, open-air skating rink that is surrounded by some of Berlin’s finest architecture, all lit up by fairy lights in the spirit of Christmas. Another highlight and something that brings a little taste of the Alps to the metropolis is the toboggan run which has spectacular views of the Brandenburg Gate. There will be an abundance of carousels, food and drink stalls, concert and various types of entertainment.

The Christmas market is a very important part of the event and will be pitching up on the 24th of November until the 28th of December, which gives you a full month of fun to experience. The event is perfect for everybody and will have even the most fussy of guests amused. If you’re looking for romance, visit the outdoor ice rink and then stroll along the market and try some of the different flavoured glühwein (mulled wine), perfect for warming you up on those icy winter nights. If you’re travelling with the family, then the carousels in the market will keep the young ones amused while you tuck into some traditional German specialities such as ‘Gans’, (stuffed goose) followed by some chocolate covered fruit skewers. The market is also perfect for anyone looking for that special Christmas present this year. You’re guaranteed to find something original that no one else would have thought of. Be careful however as you may get slightly carried away with buying things for yourself.

If anyone isn’t inspired by this winter wonderland and hasn’t been enticed to at least look into booking a hotel (hoteles Berlín), I think they should ask Santa for a big dose of Christmas spirit this year. Do make sure to book your accommodation (alojamiento Berlín) well in advance as rental apartments (Berlín apartamentos) get booked up pretty fast during this period. Let Berlin cast its spell on you this Christmas!
